4 Critical Questions for Making Open Innovation WorkI believe the below questions are critical in order for companies to succeed with open innovation.

1. How does open innovation impact the management and the organization?

Open innovation is more about a mindset than a toolbox and if done right, open innovation will over time involve everyone in the organization. I urge companies to consider how this will impact the management as well as the overall organizational structure. This should be done early in the open innovation process.

2. How can physical and virtual open innovation networks be built?

The successful open innovation companies understand that both approaches are important. You cannot rely on just one of them.

3. How can social media tools impact open innovation efforts?

The virtual efforts used to be about having a strong point-of-entry site such as P&G’s Connect+Develop. Not anymore. I believe the future winners will not only duplicate the efforts of P&G, but also turn such sites into communities that benefit the owners as well as all the stakeholders. Social media tools are getting increasingly important.

4. What mindset and skills are actually needed to succeed with open innovation?

This goes back to the first question. It starts with the right mindset and then companies need to equip their people with the proper tools needed to embrace this new way of working.

  1. It is important to question innovation itself.
    Why innovate? We often talk of the impact innovation would have, the methodology, etc. But often we lose sight of the objective/purpose of innovation.

    • I think that’s because “Innovation” has a different meaning from company to company or is often not defined clear enough! That’s why it can easily loose it’s charme to “drive Innovation activities”… In that case communication is the key.
