The Seven Habits of Effective IntrapreneursAs an inventor I have witnessed a fairly distinctive pattern of intrapreneurship within my own multi-national corporation (EMC).

The employees that are the most successful at advancing their ideas through the corporate maze tend to operate using a fairly well-defined rhythm. The chart below breaks down this rhythm into a set of discrete steps that can be learned and practiced by creative employees world-wide.

Although this diagram is cyclical, intrapreneurs-in-training cannot simply jump on at any given point in the cycle. It is imperative that their very first step be the practice and discipline of productivity. Intrapreneurs by their very nature are productive; they know how to produce new products or services based on their own ideas.

What separates an intrapreneur from the many productive employees that can be found in any corporation? The answer is that they continue to take initiative beyond their required duties.

Over the course of the next several weeks this blog will dive into these seven steps in detail. Many of these steps are already described in the book Innovate with Influence.

Hello Todd, I’m an HR Director a Bluch Chip tech firm and am really interested in this topic of Intrapreneurship for our senior technical talent (distinguished engineer level) who are extremely good at envisioning emerging technologies, innovating, influencing standards bodies, etc. but less strong in business acumen, building business propoals, and influencing executives around investment decisions.

    With your passion and experience in this area, would you have any ideas around consulting groups or training outfits, maybe VC type coaches who are out there who we could contract services from.

  2. Hi Gianna,
    In our case we did not use consultants or coaches but partnered with local universities instead. EMC is based in Massachusetts and we have contacts with MIT, Harvard, and Northeastern, for example. In November we organized a day long session on international collaboration at the MIT Media Lab. We were able to hear unbiased research on the latest techniques to collaborate effectively. It was inspiring and impactful, and we’ve started to brainstorm about how to implement what we heard.
    Like you, we are also planning on getting some training specifically around the creation of strategic proposals that can be presented in business terms. We plan on using the same strategy and are putting together an agenda with some forward-thinking professors.
