How Not to Do Social Media

Despite the fact that Twitter has been around since 2006 and Facebook has been around since 2004, social media is still the bright shiny object in the room (it's still the current marketing fad). People still think they are being innovative if they use it, and unfortunately many people still approach it as something separate and scary instead of treating it as just one tool in the toolbox of anyone working in marketing or innovation.

Large Organizations and the Business Model Canvas

Recently I was having a ‘conversation’ with Alexander Osterwalder concerning the limited adoption of the Business Model Canvas within large organizations. I was asking him if he agreed and if he had any thoughts on this. Now if you know Alex, he is either jetting off to somewhere in the world to keep spreading his Business Model gospel, or about to get immersed in his next idea associated with it, so these conversations are grabbing him through twitter or short email exchanges.

What Does the Crowd Know?

In one of my favorite movies, The Blues Brothers, the guys get themselves into a jam. They are supposed to play at Bob's Country Bunker, and don't really know what kind of music the audience enjoys. When they ask the waitress she responds, "Both kinds. Country and Western". Like the folks at Bob's Country Bunker I happen to enjoy both kinds of innovation, internal "closed" innovation and external "open" innovation.
